Philadelphia, Pennsylvania—Konrad Talon was one of three National Academy Foundation (NAF) alumni awardees recently honored in July 2010 at the annual NAF conference in Philadelphia. This national award recognizes outstanding Academy graduates for their achievements in industry, higher education, and giving back to the Academy. Konrad is pictured with MHS teacher Lori Sanada after receiving his award.

A 2005 graduate of the Maui High School Academy of Hospitality and Tourism (AOHT), Konrad credits the program for many of his successes. According to him, "The AOHT program changed the course of my future for the better. Students who are thinking about staying in Hawaii should let the AOHT entice them to join the hospitality and tourism industry." His testimony affirms this advice.

He is the first in his family to pursue a college degree. Upon graduation from high school, he enrolled at Maui Community College while working full-time as a front desk agent at the Maui Prince Hotel. After obtaining his Associate Degree in Liberal Arts, he transferred to the University of Hawaii at Manoa, entered the School of Travel Industry Management (TIM) and will graduate in December 2010 with a Bachelor of Science degree in TIM.

His most recent employment is with the soon-to-open Waikiki EDITION, a new brand of lifestyle luxury hotels by renowned hotelier Ian Schrager in partnership with Marriott International. Konrad describes it as the first hotel of its kind; he is excited to be a part of such a once-in-a-lifetime chance in the hotel industry.

Until May 2010, Konrad served as the chairman of the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Satellite Chapter, tripling its membership within a year. He also recently received the Dean’s Spirit of TIM Award for 2010.

As a mentor and role model to academy students, Konrad is on the Advisory Board for the AOHT, speaks regularly to Hawaii’s high school AOHT students, and contributes to the annual AOHT student conference and career fair. His inspirational speeches motivate students to think about higher education and a future career within the hospitality industry.

Konrad was nominated by Carol Reimann, Executive Director of the Maui Hotel and Lodging Association.

Congratulations, Konrad! Maui High values your accomplishments and school pride!
